Introduction
Hillhead is a fairly new cemetery, having been opened in November 1901 as Portknockie cemetery, the first two burials taking place on the 23rd November. Prior to this, burials took place either in Rathven or Cullen. Early in 1903 permission was granted by the council to erect head stones and later that year the council voted to change the name to Hillhead Cemetery as it was serving both Portknockie and Findochty. The name Hillhead came from the farm on whose land the cemetery was built. Hillhead Cemetery stands on the cliffs midway between Portknockie and Findochty and consists of the original ground and a new extension opened in 1989. The stones in the new part are not listed in this booklet. The old GNSR Railway between Aberdeen and Elgin (now a footpath) ran between the cemetery and the sea. I started this project in 2009 but due to unforeseen circumstances it has taken much longer than anticipated. I thank Gavin Bell who has produced the plan of the cemetery, has tried to eliminate errors in the transcriptions of the headstones and has given the final push to get this to printing. My thanks also go to some of the ladies from ANESFHS who came to Portknockie and helped with the enormous task of checking every stone. My appreciation also to Wayne Flaws who took the aerial photos of Hillhead. The help of my husband, Jim, with the photographs, checking, double checking and the addition of lair numbers was invaluable. We have tried our best to eliminate errors but if there are any which have been missed I apologise. Anne G Illingworth March 2015
