Introduction
The Memorial Inscriptions of Peterculter Kirkyard were recorded some time ago, and are published by the Aberdeen and Northeast Family History Society as booklet AA174. But that lists only those stones which lay within the ancient Kirkyard. There have been various cemetery extensions to the original burial ground. We are on the Committee of the St. Peter’s Heritage Trust in Peterculter, and it was the Chairman, Allan Pennie, who suggested we undertake the project of recording the later inscriptions in order to have all the M.I.s on record in the Heritage Centre. The date of recording was October 2005, and for this we used voice recorders and found them extremely successful. Every stone in the original Kirkyard - the booklet for this was published in 1988 - was also checked for added inscriptions and several new stones have been found. This booklet contains the memorial Inscriptions in the first extension of the cemetery (dating from about 1910). The more recent extensions have also been recorded, and it is hoped to publish these, and the additional inscriptions from the ancient Kirkyard, at a later date. We would like to thank Ian Burnett, Authorised Officer for Aberdeen City Council Bereavement Services for providing us with the layout of the Kirkyard, and Gavin Bell of the ANESFHS for his help and advice on how to record the inscriptions in an appropriate format for subsequent computer processing. The cover photograph of the old Kirkyard was taken in 1910 and is the property of the Heritage Centre. Bill & Eileen McHardy
