Introduction
The Kirkyard of St Fittick, in the parish of Nigg, being one of the oldest and most picturesque in the immediate area of Aberdeen, has long attracted the attentions of antiquarians and genealogists. In 1879, Andrew Jervise included a selection of inscriptions from St Fittick’s in volume 2 of his Epitaphs and Inscriptions … in the Northeast of Scotland. And A. Strath Maxwell, one of the founder members of Aberdeen and Northeast Scotland FHS, did a considerable amount of work on recording the stones, starting in the 1950s. But Jervise only ever recorded the small percentage of inscriptions which he considered either important or picturesque, and A. Strath Maxwell’s record remains incomplete, with gaps and duplications, and with no plan to identify the stones. So when it emerged that the Aberdeen City Archaeologists were planning a dig at the site of the old St Fittick’s Manse, together with a survey of the Kirkyard, it seemed a good opportunity to complete the job. Accordingly, a joint team of archaeologists and ANESFHS members mounted a coordinated attack on St Fittick’s in the late summer of 2004. The bulk of the work was done in the course of one hectic week, followed inevitably by a much slower process of checking and editing. This included reference to the OPR burial records and to a copy of a Lair Plan of 1940, for which we are indebted to John Main of the Torry Heritage Society. This booklet is the result of that work.
