Introduction
Robert Burns is usually associated with Alloway in Ayrshire and perhaps only his devotees realise that his ancestral home was in Glenbervie, Kincardineshire. There are several farms in the district where the family lived, such as Mains of Inchbreck where Burneses were recorded on the tenants roll in 1547 and Bogjurgan which was owned by his great-great-grandfather Walter in 1640 and was tenanted by the Burneses for 4 generations from the 16th century onwards. Brawliemuir belonged to James Burnes, his great-grandfather – the original house is now a ruin, and a little way past the prestnt day building of that name. Clochanhill was ownes by Robert Burnes his grandfather and it was probably here that William, his father was born in 1721. Other farms which were owned or tenanted by various great-uncles are Auchtochter, Cleughhead, Elfhill, HAWKHILL and West Kininmonth. It was William and his brother Robert who first went to Aryshire looking for better land. Much of the above information was gleaned from “Highway and Byways Round Kincardine” by Archibald Watt, published 1985 by Gourdas Hous Publishers, Aberdeen. ISBN 0 907301 09 6
Acknowledgements
This was a two-woman effort – My thanks to Margaret Brown, particularly for her excavations of the side of the BLEBBAR stone, buried about 1 foot deep, not once but twice – the second required on finding Jervise quoted the name as BLEBEAR. This churchyard in beautifully situated, tucked away in a secluded spot, with a burn running nearby and for once we were blessed with good weather on every visit. Shiela M.Spiers
