Introduction
The parish nowadays known as “Drumoak” was anciently called “Dalmaik”, and this name has persisted for the original ruined kirk and kirkyard on the north bank of the River Dee. As in so many parishes, the original kirk came to be considered too small, and a replacement was built, a mile and a half to the northwest, in 1835-6. Burials continued at the old kirkyard after that date, but in time the burial ground also became overcrowded, and by the end of the 19th century, burials had started at the new “Drumoak” kirk. The earlier draft memorial inscriptions for Dalmaik Kirkyard were done in 1991 by Gordon Johnson. In 2006 the entire Kirkyard was checked by Bill and Eileen McHardy and thirty three flat stones which had previously been omitted were included. Memorial Inscriptions from the New Drumoak Kirkyard are separately published in booklet AA131. Our thanks go to Morag Keith, Session Clerk at Drumoak Kirk, and to Brian Watt of Newtonhill for the 1910 image of Dalmaik.
