Description: The small burial ground at Monykebbock or Monycabock is on the site of a pre-Reformation chapel dedicated to St Colm, and now stands in a field (usually tenanted by cattle or sheep) about a mile southeast of Newmachar village. It is roughly circular, and surrounded by a wall, and, like many old burial grounds, stands higher than the surrounding land. There is a rectangular enclosure at its centre, with walls about a metre high, supposedly the burial ground of the lairds of the nearby lands of Elrick, but containing no gravestones. In the remainder of the burial ground there are 19 stones, 5 of them modern. Monykebbock is included in John A. Henderson’s “Aberdeenshire Epitaphs and Inscriptions” of 1907. Henderson found “... fifteen tombstones, none of which are of outstanding importance.” If we ignore his snobbish attitude, and concentrate on the maths, then it appears that all but one of the stones he saw are still visible. Fortunately, the missing one was among the nine which passed his test for “importance” and its text is given in the Appendix.
